U.S. Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Jodey Arrington (R-TX) introduced legislation that would limit the amount of information that certain nonprofit organizations are mandated to report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Specifically, their bill, the Don’t Weaponize the IRS Act, would not require non-profit political organizations to report the names and addresses of their major donors. The House lawmakers said that removing the requirement to report the names and addresses of donors helps protect taxpayers’ First Amendment rights, stating that such information is not needed for tax administration purposes.
“Americans should be able to donate to causes they believe in without fear of retribution from Washington bureaucrats who have a long, sad history of targeting individuals and organizations because of their political beliefs,” Kelly said. “In our democracy, it is simply un-American to hamper any individual’s right to exercise their personally held religious and political views.”
It codifies regulations put forth by the Trump administration.
Kelly is the chair of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Tax, while Arrington is the chair of the House Budget Committee. Kelly first introduced this legislation in 2021.
Companion legislation was recently introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sens. Mike Braun (R-IN) and Todd Young (R-IN).
