Several weeks after sending a letter to Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Acting Director Mick Mulvaney on the status of the Equifax data breach investigation, a group of Democratic Senators are still waiting for a response.
Former CFPB Director Richard Cordray had ordered an investigation into how hackers put the personal information of some 145 million Equifax users at-risk. However, Cordray resigned in December.
Reports say the acting director, Mulvaney has shelved the investigation of the breach at credit rating agency. The bureau has not ordered subpoenas against Equifax, sought testimony from executives, or investigated how Equifax protects data, according to news reports.
One of those senators, Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN), posted the letter, sent on Feb. 7, on his Facebook page.
“We are deeply troubled by recent news reports that, under Director Mulvaney’s leadership, may have stopped the investigation into the Equifax breach. According to these reports, the CFPB has not taken even the most preliminary steps to conduct an investigation,” the letter stated.
The letter included a list of questions asking how it will execute Equifax investigation the process. One of them is: “Has the CFPB stopped this or any other investigation related to this matter?”
The senators sought a response to the questions by Feb. 19 but have still not heard back.
