SEC adopts EDGAR amendments

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently adopted rule and form amendments that will enhance the security of its Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) system and improve filers’ access and account management capabilities.

One amendment requires EDGAR filers authorize identified individuals who will be responsible for managing their accounts.

Another amendment requires the individuals acting on behalf of EDGAR filers to present Login.gov individual account credentials to access EDGAR accounts and make filings.

In addition, the application for access to EDGAR, Form ID, will be modernized to make the form more user-friendly.

“The public and the SEC long have benefited from the EDGAR electronic filing system,” SEC Chair Gary Gensler said. “Today’s amendments are an important next step for EDGAR account access protocols.”

Filers also will have the option to use Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), a machine-to-machine method for making submissions, retrieving information, and performing account management tasks.

APIs will allow filers to manage their EDGAR accounts with minimal manual interaction with EDGAR.

The SEC opened the filer testing and feedback period on Monday. The beta software environment reflects the adopted rule and form amendments as well as any related technical changes.

Compliance with the amended Form ID is required on March 24.
