Retail organization commends CPSC nomination

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) recently voiced approval of President Trump’s nomination of Ann Marie Buerkle as Chairman and Commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

“We are happy to see Commissioner Buerkle formally nominated to serve as Chairman of the CPSC,” Kathleen McGuigan, senior vice president and deputy general counsel at RILA, said. “In her time as Commissioner and Acting Chair, Buerkle has consistently made an effort to reach out and collaborate with all stakeholders including retailers, manufacturers and consumer advocates to ensure that products sold to consumers meet the highest safety standards. We look forward to continuing to work with Chairman Buerkle and the CPSC toward that goal in the future.”

Buerkle, who currently serves as Commissioner and Acting Chair, would serve an additional seven-year term should she be confirmed.

During recent agency hearings officials said McGuigan outlined the retail industry’s priorities and perspective on risk assessment, consumer relations, and how new technologies and innovation in the retail industry could impact the agency’s approach to product safety.

RILA is the trade association of the world’s largest and most innovative retail companies, with officials noting the membership includes more than 200 retailers, product manufacturers, and service suppliers – accounting for more than $1.5 trillion in annual sales and millions of American jobs.
