House Committee on Financial Services Chair Maxine Waters (D-CA) said she has organized a Digital Assets Working Group of Democrats to target cryptocurrency and digital asset innovation.
“As cryptocurrencies, central bank digital currencies and other digital assets enter the mainstream, the Committee will look at how digital assets have begun to enter many aspects of our lives – from payments to investments to remittances – and consider how to devise legislation to support responsible innovation that protects consumers and investors while promoting greater financial inclusion,” Waters noted during the Task Force on Financial Technology’s initial hearing.
The panel would include Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), chair of the Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship and Capital Markets; Rep. Al Green (D-TX), chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations; Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT), chair of the Subcommittee on National Security, International Development and Monetary Policy; Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL), chair of the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence; Rep.Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ); Rep. Michael San Nicolas (D-GU); Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL); Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY); Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA), chair of the Task Force on Financial Technology; Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia (D-IL); Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX); and
Rep. Nikema Williams (D-GA).
The committee’s focus would be ensuring responsible innovation in the cryptocurrency and digital asset space by meeting regularly with experts and government officials to gain information regarding digital asset challenges and promises.
