NAFCU Congressional Caucus to host more than two dozen lawmakers

More than two dozen lawmakers from the House and Senate are scheduled to speak this week at the National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Union’s (NAFCU) 2017 Congressional Caucus.

The association’s annual lobbying event is expected to draw hundreds of credit union professionals to Washington in what will be the largest crowd for the caucus since 2007. Along with the lawmakers, top regulators from the National Credit Union Administration, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Small Business Administration, among others, will speak.

The caucus is an opportunity for credit union representatives to meet face-to-face with lawmakers and regulators to discuss top credit union issues. Key issues this week are data security, preservation of credit unions’ tax exemption, regulatory relief, repeal of the Durbin interchange amendment, and housing finance reform.

Featured speakers include HUD Secretary Ben Carson and SBA Administrator Linda McMahon. Also slated to speak are U.S. Sens. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), along with U.S. Reps. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Patrick McHenry (R-NC), and Maxine Waters (D-CA). NAFCU President Dan Berger will also be presenting, as well as NCUA board member Rick Metsger.

One of the highlights of the caucus is the Thunderclap campaign, a Twitter campaign launching Sept. 12 where credit union professionals will tweet about the positive impact credit unions have on their members and the economy.
