Susan Olson was recently named to serve as general counsel for the Investment Company Institute (ICI), effective this week.
Olson has been chief counsel at ICI Global since 2014. She joined ICI in 2007 as senior counsel, international affairs. Before that, she worked with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 1997 to 2007. At the SEC, she was senior counsel in the Office of Chief Counsel and branch chief and attorney-adviser in the Office of Insurance Products. From 1989 to 1997, Olson was an associate at McGuireWoods LLP.
As general counsel, Olson will be ICI’s chief legal officer. She will be responsible for overseeing legal and regulatory matters, including investment companies, capital markets, retirement policy, tax, and international issues.
“Susan brings to her new position a wealth of professional experience, deep knowledge of our membership, and a comprehensive understanding of the challenges that regulated funds face in the United States and other jurisdictions,” ICI President and CEO Paul Schott Stevens said. “As a member of our senior management team, she has been instrumental to the work and success of ICI Global. I am confident she will provide outstanding leadership for our Law Department.”
Olson replaces Dorothy Donohue, who has served as acting general counsel since June 2017. Donohue remains deputy general counsel, securities regulation.
“Dorothy has guided our legal efforts with skill and expertise through a challenging period of regulatory change,” Stevens said. “As deputy general counsel, Dorothy will continue to play a major role in our busy agenda with the SEC and other regulators in the months ahead. We are deeply grateful for her many years of outstanding service at ICI.”
Olson is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.
