The housing project, One80 Place, has 70 affordable housing units and a 65-bed family shelter currently under construction. Located in an Opportunity Zone, developers hope the $44 million project is the first of many across the country.

“To have the Secretary of HUD to stop by Charleston, South Carolina, invest his valuable time in seeing the progress that we are making as a community, it is a blessing…and it is also a blessing to have One80 Place working so hard on behalf of a critical issue,” Scott, the chair of Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs committee, said. “One of our top goals on the Committee is housing and affordability, and I’m thankful that we have a partner who’s on the job every single day, leading the way from Washington, and many people in the local community, on the job, every single day, helping us take care of our own communities.”

Scott said the ROAD to Housing Act bill would help ease some of the regulatory pressures for similar housing development and allow for more homeownership.

During his confirmation hearings, Turner said he was committed to visiting areas like Charleston to see the challenges Americans face. He has also said Scott’s ROAD to Housing Act would provide motivation for investing in affordable housing initiatives. The ROAD to Housing Act would address federal housing policy and introduce reforms across the U.S. housing market while supporting families and communities.
