A bill introduced by U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) that is designed to help more small businesses compete for federal contracts was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Strengthening Subcontracting for Small Business Act (HR 7694) passed in the House by a vote of 411-11, with five House members not voting. It now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
The bill seeks to modify the requirements of the Small Business Act relating to the evaluation of the subcontracting plans of certain offerers and for other purposes. It is designed to help ensure that federal government contractors utilize small businesses in subcontracts.
“Small businesses are the engines driving our economy, yet it’s becoming more difficult for them to compete for federal contracts,” Stauber, who is co-chair of the House Construction Procurement Caucus and sits on the House Small Business Committee, said. “At a time when small businesses are struggling with inflation, a supply chain crisis, and a labor shortage, this legislation will provide them with a greater opportunity for success. I’m glad to see this critical legislation pass the House and hope to see quick action in the Senate.”
The bill was co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-MD).
