Results of a recent Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI)-funded poll determined taking necessary precautions should play a vital role in emergency and disaster preparation.
Officials said findings from SurveyMonkey revealed 56 percent of residents across Texas, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Florida had not taken any precautions this year in advance of hurricane season – but industry leaders said the case for disaster preparation is strong.
“Too often we find people overestimate their preparedness for natural disasters and other emergencies,” Chris Hackett, senior director of personal lines policy for PCI, said. “This can create a gap in preparedness, and that could make a significant difference in how smooth your recovery will be in the aftermath of a storm or other natural disaster. The best way to keep from being surprised if you sustain damage is to review your coverage with your insurance agent or company each year.”
With September serving as National Preparedness Month, PCI recommends conducting
a disaster insurance drill.
“With wildfires raging in the west, floods occurring in many parts of the country, and the peak of hurricane season ahead of us, every family should create an emergency plan that includes information about where to go and what to do if you are forced to evacuate,” Hackett said. “Other steps include maintaining an emergency supply kit, practicing your plan with family members, and ensuring that your property is adequately insured.”
