U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) applauded the Trump Administration’s expected trade action against China for violating intellectual property laws.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is expected to lead the investigation.
“When China cheats our trade laws, Ohio workers’ pay the price,” Brown said. “Ambassador Lighthizer is taking quick action against China by launching this investigation, and I’m hopeful this is a sign the Administration will continue to take action against other Chinese violations – including China’s steel overcapacity which is putting Ohio steelworkers out of work. I look forward to working with President Trump and his Administration to reset our trade relationship with China so it works better for American workers and manufacturers.”
Brown outlined several specific actions on trade including renegotiating NAFTA, withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, resetting U.S.-China trade relations, strengthening enforcement, and cracking down on currency manipulation in a letter he sent to President Trump last November.
In May, Brown proposed a plan President Trump should follow as he pursues a trade plan with China. Brown outlined steps that must be a part of the administration’s efforts to work with China on trade to produce actual results for U.S. companies and workers, particularly those who have been harmed by China’s steel overcapacity.
