The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Office of Customer Education and Outreach will be hosting events this week to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection.
The first event, Romance Investment Fraud: A Global-Scale Crypto Scam, will be held today and is a hybrid event. It will focus on concerns regarding technology and emerging assets.
Scams have been linked to overseas organized crime syndicates that have stolen billions of Americans’ dollars. A panel of federal regulators will speak about the growing scale of the fraud, how to detect it, and how to help spread awareness about it.
Also during the event, Dr. John Griffin, University of Texas James A. Elkins Centennial chairman in finance, will discuss his paper, How Do Crypto Flows Finance Slavery? The Economics of Pig Butchering.
The second event will be held Wednesday. The webinar, Protect Yourself: NFA and CFTC Resources, will discuss resources consumers can use to help protect themselves against fraud.
The events are part of World Investor Week, a global effort organized by the International Organization of Securities Commissions. Organizations representing more than 100 jurisdictions alert and empower investors as they consider participating in areas such as crypto assets, digital and technological investment, and sustainable finance.
