The organization recently launched the “Roadmap for Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI),” which offers a set of principles as a means of guiding businesses as they implement responsible AI, reflecting company perspectives and real-world experiences.

Core principles of the guide include diversity innovation; mitigating unfair bias potential; designing as a means of implementing transparency, explainability, and interpretability; investing in a future-ready AI workforce; and adapting existing governance structures to account for AI.

“There is now true momentum among companies to realize the promise and benefits of AI, and this Roadmap provides them with a practical guide for developing and deploying AI responsibly with safety, effectiveness, and trust,” Accenture CEO and immediate past Chair of the Business Roundtable Technology Committee Julie Sweet said. “This is a defining moment for CEO leadership across industries in sharing responsibility, promoting public-private partnership, and driving innovation for the benefit of all.”

Sweet spearheaded the effort of CEOs in developing the organization’s Responsible AI Initiative.

“Artificial Intelligence powers many technological advancements today and holds tremendous promise for our future,” said Visa Chairman and CEO Alfred F. Kelly, Jr., who serves as chair of the Business Roundtable Technology Committee. “As these applications are increasingly developed and deployed at scale, societal trust in the use of AI is critical.”

Kelly said business and government leaders must work together to earn and maintain trust in AI by demonstrating responsible AI deployment and oversight.

Business Roundtable is encouraging the Biden administration, Congress, and regulators to establish practices, rules, and guidelines consistent with policy recommendations, per authorities.
