New cyber certification program for bank examiners announced by state regulatory group

A new Certified Cyber Security Examiner (CCSE) designation certificate will be created by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) in response to the ongoing cybersecurity threat regulators face within the financial services industry.

The certification program aims to increase the standards of performing bank examinations for cybersecurity management.

John W. Ryan, CSBS president and CEO, said, “For this reason, CSBS has made it a priority to not only work with industry on ways to better safeguard against this threat, but to better equip state bank examiners with advanced training and knowledge in this area.”

The certification program is based on nationally recognized standards of ethics, knowledge and practice and it acknowledges demonstrated experience and proficiency in the field.

A team of state bank examiners with advanced knowledge of IT information systems and cyber risk management worked together to develop the CCSE program.

Bank examiners can become CCSE certified by having five years of examination experience where they have participated in at least five examinations. They will have to complete a minimum of 96 hours of advanced educational studies and show proof of successful job performance.
