“Derek’s leadership and sound counsel have been critical as the Treasury Department works to implement President (Donald) Trump’s pro-growth agenda,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said. “His ongoing commitment to serving the American people, deep policy acumen and legislative expertise, as well as years of operational experience make him the ideal person to perform the duties of deputy secretary. I appreciate his continued service on my team as we address issues vital to the success of the economy.”

Theurer joined the department in January, serving as counselor and assisting Bessent with global tax negotiations and the enactment of Trump’s tax cuts. He was nominated to be Legislative Affairs deputy under secretary in March. He holds degrees accounting, law and taxation.

Former Treasury Deputy Secretary Michael Faulkender left in August after five months.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) commissioner Billy Long left the agency during the same period to become ambassador to Iceland, and Bessent has been serving as the IRS commissioner since. Bessent named Frank Bisignano to a newly created position of IRS CEO on Monday.
