“Kevin has the ideal combination of experience in internal investigations, compliance programs, and law enforcement to hit the ground running as our new inspector general and ensure our agency’s operations are transparent, efficient, and effective,” SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins said. “He is a proven leader – and former inspector general – with a reputation for fairness and objectivity, and we’re pleased to welcome someone with his record of accomplishment back to the SEC.”

For the past nine years, Muhlendorf has been a partner at Wiley Rein LLP in Washington, D.C., a white-collar defense and government investigations practice. For portions of 2023 and 2024, Muhlendorf served as Acting Inspector General for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

Muhlendorf has previous law enforcement experience in U.S. Department of Justice’s Criminal Division Fraud Section’s Securities and Financial Fraud Unit.

Acting Inspector General Katherine Reilly will return to her role as a deputy inspector general on July 28. She has been acting inspector general since May.
